Nutrition
AFFI actively advocates across a diverse spectrum of food nutrition issues, including federal programs and services designed to provide families, mothers, infants and school children with access to affordable and nutritious food options.
AFFI’s nutrition-related priorities include:
- Advocating that all federal feeding programs, including the school breakfast, lunch and Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP), align with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs). The 2015 DGAs continue to recommend that Americans eat all forms of fruits and vegetables, including frozen.
- Advocating that participants in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and the Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP) have access to nutritious and affordable frozen foods, including fruits and vegetables at the federal and state level.
- Promoting, through menu modeling, that frozen foods have a place in a healthy lifestyle and meet the recommendations of the 2015 DGAs, USDA’s MyPlate and USDA’s Moderate Food Cost Plan. Based on these results, AFFI created a Supermarket Dietitian Toolkit to make these findings actionable for consumers.
- Fostering scientific research, public awareness and industry education regarding the nutritional, safety and societal attributes of frozen foods through the work of the Frozen Food Foundation.
